Public school...the jump off to success

"My mom never took me out
of public schools. I stayed in public schools all while
I was doing 227, I still had to do dishes, even though I was getting the biggest paycheck in the house"
        actress Regina King

Would you like a list of every successful person who started
off in life at a public school?

Sorry.

THAT WOULD TAKE WAY
TOO MUCH PAPER.

And you don't have enough time to read them all.
raven symone--atlanta public schools
Orlando Brown also attended public school.

But anyway, you just finished reading a quote by Regina King, now a major player in Hollywood.

She got her start in public school at age 5.
Her big entertainment break on TV at age 14.

Regina played the part of Brenda Jenkins on an NBC show called 227.

Since then Regina has appeared in movies like Poetic Justice, Boyz N Hood, Enemy of the State &
Jerry Maguire.
As a youngster Regina had no idea that one day public school would help make her successful.

How did public school help
to make her successful?

Here's how.
To become successful in the business of entertainment,
YOU MUST HAVE THE ABILITY TO DEAL WITH ALL TYPES OF PERSONALITIES.

Fact#  If you are attending a public school, you are gaining valuable experience in learning how to adjust to all types of people, learning how to adjust to all types of personalities.

LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE.

Trey Songz attended public schools
You'll see.
Over the years students of
public schools will continue to be the jump off for the most valuable players in the game!

Drake...scared for the right reason.

"Scared for the first time everything just clicked...
what if I don't really do
the numbers they predict?
Drake---lyrics--9am in Dallas

NOTHING FUNNY ABOUT FAILURE.
Or about the fear of failure.

If you didn't already know...
in real life some self doubt
IS NORMAL.

TAKING ACTION
helps overcome self doubt.

When you take action your brain sends a signal to your body something like this...
Gotta get back to you later fear...
RIGHT NOW I'm too busy making this work to think about you.

HERE'S MORE PROOF THAT SOME
SELF DOUBT
IS NORMAL...EVEN FOR STARS.

"I don't think I'll be touring.
I have really bad stage fright.
Just the thought of touring makes me so nervous I  could cry"

brandy-jet mag-july 1998

When Brandy got her big break she was a teenager with a lot of the normal anxieties that often come with being a teen.

Unlike many other teens though Brandy took ACTION.

She learned how to
OVERCOME her fears.

How?  Here's one tip.
Focus on where you want to go...
not on what you're afraid may happen along the way.

Brandy learned how to turn nervous energy into the "JUICE" she needed to boost her performances.

Stage fright and test taking fright have a lot in common.

Stay tuned. We have more tips!

Winning Thinking

It's October 2002.
Kanye West has just signed a hard earned record deal.

Tired from working all night he falls asleep while driving to his hotel room.

It's ugly.
A steering wheel up in his face.

Weeks later Kanye records the hit "Thru the Wire" with a broken jaw.

THE BELIEF OF CHAMPIONS

When crazy things happen...
can you keep your focus on the FUTURE?

"But I'm a champion so I turn tragedy to triumph"

What's the Belief of Champions?

Shizzle happens...
you deal with it the best way you can at the time...
and you keep moving.
"I've been through, you know,
a lot of things that are not normal,
things you guys don't even know about"
Serena Williams   NY Times June 22, 2011

Serena Williams won a tennis match this month.

It was her first match in 11 months.
 Serena had health problems.
She feared for her life.

When things get crazy...
can you keep your FOCUS
on YOUR future?

When things don't make sense you MUST ask the
right questions.

Don't ask questions like...
WHY ME?
                   OR
What did I do to deserve this?

Those questions don't have answers.
They will leave you feeling like a VICTIM.

Ask questions like...

now that this has happened...
how can I turn it to my advantage?

How many rappers start their career with a broken jaw?
It takes an extraordinarily strong belief system.
You don't have to be born with it. Say hello to your little friend BiggaFiggaMedia.com

Overcoming Stinking Thinking

"Growing up in a neighborhood like that, you don't have any hope, you don't plan for anything"
Omar Epps--LA Mag--1998 interview

Like many kids, Omar Epps grew up in a neighborhood full of the wrong A-B-C-s (addicts buying crack)

Unlike many other kids though, he has invested lots of time and energy into SELF improvement.

Ya see, trying to change your neighbor just AIN'T gonna work.
What has to change is YOU.

Ever smell milk that's gone bad?

How does it smell?
If you drink it, what will probably happen?

Stinking thinking will make you sicker for a longer time.

Here's an example of stinking thinking.
Being smart is a white thing.

What misguided person came up with the idea that black people are not supposed to be smart?

Just like bad milk that kind of thinking will keep you sick.

Then you will be sick and tired of being broke.

Stinking thinking is like a prison where the locks are on the INSIDE.
You should know that your brain is like a computer and you have much more control over it than you may be using.

You have the power to NOT do everything that crosses your mind.

Pretending to be dumb is funny...on TV

It's easy to enjoy great TV.

Like BET's hit show The Game.

Great talent + great writing =
GREAT ENTERTAINMENT

It takes focus and determination to succeed in front of the camera the way Pooch Hall does it.

The same for Tia Mowry.

At first the casting director wouldn't even talk to her.

Focus and determination.

If you would like a shot at working on TV--doing anything less than your best
is anything but SMART.

The average weekly salary for a sitcom writer can range from $2700 week.

Do you like happy endings on television?
Then become a script writer.

Work to improve your reading ...

Work to improve your writing skills

Pretending to dumb is OK on TV...

               not in real life.
Do you represent a school and/or other organization? If so, be assured that keeping your students engaged & connected to your curriculum is our number one priority.

Society lied to me.

Believe it or not...
Everyone has motivation.

Sadly though, lots of people are motivated to do nothing.

For example, many young people are motivated to SIT on their talent because they believe society has lied to them.

Another example, some people are motivated to do nothing but smoke funny smelling cigarettes all day & play video games.

Why?

Motivations like this.

"If I'm not successful then the whole world will know that you are a bad parent"

(of course it's subconscious)

And since most of society is  locked into looking for a certain preapproved vision of how motivation looks...

many mistakenly believe there is no motivation.

Is it possible that because so many in society are looking for motivation that shows up in a particular way...
that they look right past it?

It's there.

Even what many believe is
mis-directed motivation is still MOTIVATION.
Perhaps we should allow students to find their own motivation for studying.

Asking all students...
how often do you study or do your homework just to get an adult off your back?

Not exactly 5 star motivation...

Why not find your own motivation?

For example, how would you like a job that allowed you to arrange the travel schedule for Rihanna?

Do you think that studying geography would be relevant?

Do you represent a school and/or other organization? If so, be assured that keeping your students engaged & connecting your curriculum to their motivation must be your number one priority.

Girl...just make up your mind!

THE YEAR IS 1984...
THE JACKSONS DO A FOLLOW UP TOUR TO MICHAEL'S THRILLER ALBUM.
But the biggest headline is the bombshell announcement that little sister JANET JACKSON,
18 yrs old elopes with singer James Debarge.
A young miss Jackson faced decisions that would overwhelm MANY.
ABOUT WHAT?
About whether to go against her families wishes and marry that fine young singer that everybody wants.
A decision about Joe Jackson her father.
Is he overprotective or is he just what she needs to swim with the business sharks?

At a young age Janet begins to show that BEING IN CONTROL of her life is a high priority for her.

Even though she's a member of a powerful family...
BEING INDEPENDENT
IS A PRIORITY.
The CONTROL album is the breakout she needs.

It's like a biography.

Most of the songs reflect real life stuff that Janet's dealing with.

What's up in your life?

Do you have some decisions to make?

We know…stupid question,
of course you do.

#@!$ SHIZZLE HAPPENS

You got a bad break today...

Which will you decide to FOCUS on?

A. Yesterday's bad breaks
(Am I cursed!)

B. How tomorrow probably won't be much better.

C. How to use what just happened to your advantage.

A bad break like losing your TOP talent just when you are trying to launch a career!

"Over the years, I've had to learn to control my anger and rage. I have to have tough skin because I have to wake up and hear so many lies about me and deal with so much envy"
P-Diddy--Vibe  Aug 2004

Shizzle happens
you deal with it the best way you can at the time and you keep moving.

C is the correct answer if all you are trying to do is win.
